Four weeks of roadworks – and traffic lights – in Frome during gas works

A SCHEME to upgrade gas pipes in Frome is set to last almost four weeks – with a series of temporary traffic lights in place during the roadworks.

Wales & West Utilities carrying out work in the Oakfield Road area, which got underway today (April 28).

The firm said barring any engineering difficulties, it will finish by May 23, but warned people a number of sets of lights will be in operation.

“The gas emergency and pipeline service has worked with Somerset Council to plan these works, and it has been agreed that a mix of multi-way traffic lights will be in operation as the works progress,” a Wales & West spokesperson said.

Traffic lights in Frome planned during roadworks in April and May:
• Four-way lights on the junction of Oakfield Road, Dommetts Lane, Green Lane and Somerset Road (April 28 – May 2)
• Two-way lights on Oakfield Road (May 6 – 16)
• Three-way lights on the junction of Oakfield Road and Critchill Road (May 12 – 23)

Simon Lee is managing this work for Wales & West Utilities and said: “This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the wider area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.”
