WORK is set to begin next week on a major overhaul of a busy North Somerset road network – with a closure in place throughout.
Upgrades at the Worle Interchange are set to get underway on Monday (February 23), running until May, as part of a scheme funded by the Government.
Work and changes being carried out at Worle Interchange includes:
- Three new large bus shelters featuring extra space for wheelchairs and buggies, each topped with a living roof of native plant species supporting local biodiversity
- Five real-time information screens with audio functionality to support visually impaired passengers
- Improved public spaces including upgraded lighting, new seating, and an identifiable new landmark feature at the central island
- Safer pedestrian crossings on Commercial Way and Queensway, improving links to and from the interchange
- Enhanced cycle facilities, including additional stands, secure cycle parking, and a cycle maintenance station
Worle Interchange will be closed for the entire construction period, with pedestrian and bus diversion routes in place.

- Bus stop outside the Food Warehouse, Commercial Way: X1/X1s to Bristol, X5 to Portishead, X18 to Nailsea, A3 to Bristol Airport
- Bus stop near the Summerhouse, Park Way: X1/X1s to Weston, X5 to Hutton, X18 to Weston, A3 to Weston and 6 to Weston
- Service 1s will arrive and depart from the Becket Road stop on Queensway
Cllr Hugh Malyan, North Somerset Council Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Throughout the works, we’re working closely with our bus operators to keep services running smoothly and minimise disruption for passengers.
“There will be people at the interchange on Monday, February 23, helping passengers find their new stop as well as posters and temporary floor spray signs, highlighting where the interim bus stops are. We appreciate residents’ patience while the works take place and look forward to delivering a much-improved interchange this spring.”
