Works underway to bring the right time back to Langport

WORK is underway to repair a landmark Somerset clock – that has stopped.

The timepiece, which proudly protrudes from the top of Grade II-listed Langport Town Hall, stopped on the morning of May 12.

Landmark Langport, the charity that looks after landmarks, said an engineer had been called to repair the octagonal town centre timepiece – and urged people not to use it to set their watches in the meantime.

As work got underway, the group gave Langport folk a glimpse at workings of the historic timepiece, which has been at the town hall since 1883 – having replaced the original, which had been keeping time since 1802.

It was made by JW Benson Ltd, a London-based clockmaker, with a plaque on the mechanism proudly station the firm is ‘clockmaker to the Queen and Prince of Wales’.

“So, our beloved clock is having a bit of a moment, but will soon be fixed,” a Landmark Langport spokesperson said.

“We thought you might like a glimpse of what’s inside – amazing isn’t it?”
