Summer Solstice: Where you can park at Glastonbury Tor – and where you can’t

THOSE heading to Glastonbury for the Summer Solstice are being urged to use designated car parks – or risk having their vehicle towed away.

Glastonbury Town Council and the National Trust have issued advice to anyone heading to the town – and the ancient Tor in particular – this evening for the solstice, an important date on the Pagan calendar.

“Previous Solstice celebrations have seen irresponsible vehicle parking on Stonedown Lane, blocking access for residents, preventing farmers from tending livestock, and obstructing emergency vehicles,” a council spokesperson said.

Previous years have seen action from then-Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council, Glastonbury Town Council and Avon and Somerset Police with the Glastonbury Multi-Agency Group to work jointly on a scheme to prevent problems.

Steps included a safety scheme in Stonedown Lane, enforcing a clearway along the road, which has proven to be successful, the town council said.

“Again this year Glastonbury Town Council (and) Avon and Somerset Police are working with the National Trust to ensure everybody has an enjoyable and trouble-free Solstice,” a spokesperson said.

A new bus stop, plus disabled bays for blue badge holders, are on offer, with “ample” parking provided in the town, they added.

Bus services run every 30 mins from the town centre, except between 1pm and 2pm, for people heading up the Tor.

Meanwhile, National Trust wardens will be out and about to ensure people are aware of – and abide by – rules at the historic site.

Rules at the Glastonbury Tor for the Summer Solstice include: Camping and fires are prohibited on Glastonbury Tor and the surrounding area, while police and parking enforcement will be patrolling during the run-up to the Solstice on Saturday, June 21, with penalty notices issued to those parked illegally, and where necessary, vehicles will be towed away.
