ADVENTUROUS folks are being offered the chance to start their Christmas countdown in style – abseiling down a 60ft drop at Cheddar Gorge.
The annual St Margaret’s Hospice Abseil, sponsored by Blackdown Finance, is set to take place on Sunday, December 1, and people are being urged to sign up.
Participants are invited to don their Santa suits to descend at down one of Somerset’s most iconic locations, promising a heart-raving experience with stunning views.
After completing the abseil, participants will be greeted at the bottom with a well-earned medal and a festive mince pie.
Last year, 50 brave Santas came together to conquer the gorge, raising £12,500 for St Margaret’s Hospice – and organisers hope to beat that in 2024.
One of last year’s Santas, Phillippa, a long-time St Margaret’s receptionist and the oldest person to take on the Cheddar challenge, took on the abseil with her daughter, Lisa.
“If I can do it, anyone can,” she said. “It was such a supportive experience, and the feeling of raising over £1,000 for a local charity at Christmas was unforgettable.”

Participants need to raise £125 to take their place at the top of the gorge
St Margaret’s said people raising the minimum sponsorship, of £125, could provide vital family support for a child or young person grieving the loss of a parent.
However, spaces are limited, so people are being urged to sign up as soon as possible for a fee of £35.
For group bookings or questions, email events@st-margarets-hospice.org.uk.
No previous abseil experience is required and participants need to raise at least £125 sponsorship prior to the event.
