RESIDENTS at a Somerset care home have dusted off their dancing shoes for a new initiative to help people connect with one another in a relaxed and supportive environment.
This month saw the first Dementia Disco take place at the Crandon Springs care Home, in Wells, with Jan McNeill providing non-strop disco classics.
The activities team at the care home came up with the idea after learning how many residents enjoyed dancing – and invited along members of the community and friends of the home to the first official dementia-friendly disco.
Building on the success of the event, the home has decided to make it a regular thing and will now be hosting bi-monthly Dementia Discos throughout the coming year.

General manager, Meg Cleal, said: “The Dementia Disco is a fantastic way to connect with others in a relaxed and supportive environment.
“It’s wonderful to see the power of music to bring joy and reminiscence for those living with dementia, their families and caregivers. Everyone had an amazing time.
“We’re really looking forward to the next disco and making more friends in our local community.
“If anyone is unable to make it on the day but would like to pop in for a chat and a cup of tea, our doors are always open.”

One family member who attended the disco with her mum, who currently lives in another local care home, said: “We’re so pleased we came to the Dementia Disco at Crandon Springs – there’s so much positive energy and life here, and it’s so well organised – we’ve had a fabulous time.”
And her mum added: “It’s so friendly and happy here, such a good atmosphere – it’s number one.”
Between dances, Crandon Springs resident Pat thanked staff for giving her “the best time”, while resident Neville’s daughter added: “Dad is really enjoying the disco and loving the fun of it. My mum always enjoyed a good party with friends, so this is a lovely reminder of happy times as well as an opportunity to have fun together today.”
People and community groups can find out more about the Dementia Disco, and book to attend, by calling 01749 685180, or emailing CrandonSprings.Reception@barchester.com.
The next Dementia Disco is set to take place on Wednesday, July 23, between 3pm and 5pm.
