MP secures Commons debate over Yeovil maternity services closure

CONCERNS over the closure of maternity services at Yeovil District Hospital will be discussed in Parliament next week.

MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) has been granted an Adjournment Debate in the Commons on Tuesday, June 4, where he will raise “serious concerns” about the temporary closure.

An Adjournment Debate is a 30-minute debate held at the end of each sitting day in the House of Commons, allowing MPs to bring a specific local or national issue directly to the attention of a Government Minister and put questions on the official record.

Mr Dance said he will use the opportunity to hold the Government and NHS leaders to account over the six-month closure of the inpatient maternity service in Yeovil and to press for a clear commitment to restoring safe and local care.

The closure, announced earlier this month with just six days’ notice, has caused widespread concern across Yeovil and South Somerset.

Mr Dance said: “This is an important moment to put Yeovil’s maternity services firmly on the national agenda.

“I’ll be pressing the Government for answers—and for a clear plan to reopen this vital service as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The MP recently raised the Yeovil maternity issue with the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during PMQs, when he was promised a meeting with the Health Secretary to discuss the matter.

Next week, people can watch the debate live on Parliament TV, online at www.parliamentlive.tv.
