Fundraiser launched after Somerset youth football coach breaks back in holiday fall

AN APPEAL has been launched to support a “genuine community hero” from Somerset who suffered serious injuries after falling from a balcony while on holiday.

Matty Durbin, a coach of Clutton Under-10s football team, is understood to have fallen last week, suffering a fractured pelvis and four back fractures.

Now, a fundraiser has been launched to support the self-employed electrician and his family as he is treated in hospital after the tragedy, believed to have occurred in Magaluf, Majorca.

The fundraiser, set up by Adam Gould, said: “Many of you will know Matty Durbin as the passionate and dedicated coach of Clutton U10s, and a familiar face across Clutton FC.

“Whether he’s giving up his evenings to run training or cheering the kids on at the weekend, Matty is always there, a genuine community hero who never asks for anything in return.

“Last week, while away in Spain, Matty suffered a terrible accident. He fell from a balcony and fractured his pelvis and his back in four places. He’s currently stuck in Spain, unable to travel home, and faces a long, painful recovery.

“Matty is a self-employed electrician and has his partner and two young children at home. With no way to work for the foreseeable future, and additional costs building up abroad, his family are facing a tough few months.

“Anyone who knows Matty will know he’d be mortified we’re doing this — but the truth is, he needs a bit of help right now. He’s spent years giving his time and energy to others. Now it’s time for us to give a little back.”

The fund, Adam said, is raising money to cover travel expenses for family while he’s still in Spain, as well as travel and repatriation when he’s well enough to return, to help support his partner and children while he’s unable to work, and to provide any mobility aids, physio, or help he needs during his recovery.

“Matty, over the years, has sponsored many youth team football kits and training tops and is always first to help out when someone has faced injuries or difficult times in the past,” the fundraiser added.

“Not only is he a fellow coach but he’s also a huge Bristol City fan, a role model to the kids he coaches, and a cracking bloke. Let’s rally around him like he’s done for so many others.

“Please donate whatever you can — every penny truly will make a difference to Matty and his family during this incredibly tough time.

“And if you’re not in a position to give, simply sharing this page with others can still make a massive impact.

“At times like this, the football family is at its strongest – pulling together, standing by one of our own, and showing just how powerful community can be.

“Let’s do what we can for Matty.”

Frome Town United FC was among those to share the appeal on social media, saying: “Grassroots football is nothing without its volunteers, and as such, we are one big family regardless of the badge on our shirts.

“You may not know him personally, but some of you will no doubt have crossed paths with him on the sidelines at some point.

“If you can help in any way — even just sharing the link, I’m sure it would mean a lot to Matt and his family.”

The appeal in support of Matty Durbin has so far raised more than £4,300 of a £6,000 target. For more details, and to make a donation, visit gofundme.com/f/support-for-matty-durbin-local-youth-football-coach.
