Former Somerset church could become a dentist if plans are approved

A FORMER Somerset church could become a dentist, if plans are approved.

RPA Dental, on behalf of the Wedmore Foundation for Dentistry & Health, has applied to Somerset Council for permission to convert the former Methodist Church in Sand Road into a dental surgery.

The scheme would see five surgery rooms created at the Grade II-listed building, as well as a consultation room, office, and a reception/waiting area.

“All new accommodation sits entirely within the existing envelope, using lightweight, transparent and reversible construction,” the application said.

“Reuse of the church avoids unnecessary demolition, reduces embodied carbon, enhances longevity, and ensures the building remains in active community-serving use.”

It added the hall would remain “open and spacious”, while the existing non-original gallery floor would be removed, with a new floor constructed.

As well as internal alterations, a 13-space car park would be created outside, including an accessible bay.

“The building has stood vacant for several years and is now showing signs of disrepair,” the application concluded.

“The proposals secure its long-term future through sensitive reuse and repair rather than redevelopment, ensuring the continued relevance of this historic structure.”
