SOMERSET restaurants have been ranked among the best in the country.
Independent restaurant guide Square Meal has compiled a list of the UK’s top 100 eateries – featuring half a dozen from the county.
From Bath to Chew Valley and Burton, Somerset foodies have a wealth of culinary excellence to enjoy.
And slightly further afield food fans can find the top-ranked restaurant – Wilsons, in Bristol – which came in at number one. It was followed by Skof, in Manchester, with Nottingham’s Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms in third, Vraic Vale in Guernsey fourth and L’Enclume, in Cartmel, Cumbria, fifth.
In Somerset, the highest-placed eatery was Upstairs at Landrace, in Walcot Street, Bath, which ranked 15th.
Bruton’s Osip was in the top 20, coming in at number 18, while The Pony Chew Valley, at Chew Magna, is ranked 44th, Root Bath at 64, and Olive tree Bath at 76th.
The final Somerset to make the list is Briar, in Frome, which ranks at number 92.

“It’s no secret that the UK’s restaurant sector is facing formidable challenges,” a Square Meal spokesperson said. “And yet, with each year that passes, hospitality pros continue to invest everything they have into projects for the love of what they do. It pays off.
“New openings span the length of the UK, from the Scottish Highlands to the Channel Islands, delivering serious quality at every level.
“Standout gastropubs, heavyweight fine dining and confident modern cooking sit alongside enduring institutions still operating at the top of their game.”
The list was compiled after reviewing recommendations from readers, highlighting “incredible restaurants flying under the radar, reinforce our critics’ findings, and serve as an invaluable measure of local esteem”.
“We’ve visited (and revisited) countless contenders, honing in on those that exemplify what the UK does best,” the spokesperson added.
“The outcome is a list built on performance, value, and quality. From affordable gems to remarkable experiences worth forking out for, each restaurant deserves its spot among the top restaurants in the UK.”

Osip, in Bruton, is ranked at number 18
