Yeovil road closures to finish traffic light and crossing upgrades

WORK to finish upgrades of pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and walking and cycling routes in Yeovil will see road closures put in place next week.

Two Somerset Council Active Travel schemes – pedestrian and cycling – in the town centre are nearing completion, with work set to get underway on March 17.

During the road closures, diversions will be in operation and any affected bus routes will be re-routed.

The affected roads in Yeovil during roadworks are:

South Western Terrace/Central Road/Middle Street/Old Station Road

Central Road will be closed for up to one week to enable resurfacing of the carriageway and upgrades to traffic signals.

Consecutively and to make best use of the closure, a series of night time only closures in South Western Terrace/Middle Street will also be in operation for new road crossings to be installed as part of the signals upgrade.

A final night time closure will be in place for final surfacing and road marking.

Hendford

On Hendford, the focus has been the creation of a shared cycling and walking route.

To complete the final phase of works here, a full road closure will be in place northbound from Brunswick Street to Hendford Medical Centre from March 24 to April 4.

Additional travel time is recommended due to the diversion route.

At the northern end of Hendford, temporary traffic lights remain in place to enable completion of works in that area. The carriageway will be fully resurfaced following the works, which will conclude the works in Hendford.

Pen Mill link

Further minor repair works are planned on the Country Park link to Pen Mill railway station.

These will be completed in the coming six to eight weeks, with no road closures needed. Residents should not see any significant disruption while these are being undertaken.

Cllr Richard Wilkins, lead member for transport and digital at the council, said: “It is hugely exciting to be nearing the completion of the new, upgraded and extended active travel network across our town centre.

“Once completed, we will see improved and safer accessibility and connectivity for all users – whether that be by road, bike or foot.

“These road closures mark the final stage of the Active Travel scheme associated with Yeovil Refresh, delivering a new, enhanced infrastructure to Yeovil’s core streets. Representing an investment of £1.2m in Yeovil’s highways network, the works will have enabled long awaited upgrades to signals and crossings into these areas, combined with resurfacing of key streets.”
