Weather warning issued for Somerset as cold weather continues

SOMERSET is being warned to expect icy conditions overnight tonight (January 6) and into tomorrow morning.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice across much of the country, in place from midnight tonight until 10am on Wednesday.

It comes after several days of freezing temperatures – and snow on higher ground – has hit the county.

A Met Office forecaster said clear skies on Tuesday night would “lead to icy patches on untreated wet surfaces”.

“This could lead to some minor disruption, especially on Wednesday morning,” they said.

The warning is in place for Somerset and North Somerset, with forecasters predicting temperatures falling to around -2C, with “icy stretches developing where skies clear”.

Wednesday, a Met Office forecaster said, would be “another cold day for many, with rather cloudy skies”.

“A scattering of wintry showers will possible,” they added, along with “gusty winds”, and temperatures rising to around 9C.

It comes as many households in Somerset and North Somerset have seen rubbish and recycling collections disrupted this week as crews tackle icy conditions on roads and underfoot, including some snow on higher ground, including on Exmoor.
