DRIVERS are being urged to avoid using a busy road in Weston-super-Mare next week during work to trim trees due to the “possibility of falling branches”.
North Somerset Council (NSC) said work to cut back willow trees along a 700-metre stretch of Herluin Way will get underway on Tuesday (July 15) and is set to take three days.
The council said the trees, which will be cut back to ground level, are posing “an unacceptable risk to road safety due to the possibility of falling branches”.
Coppicing will be carried out on the inbound side of Herluin Way from opposite Hutton Moor Leisure centre to outside Tim Hortons between 9.30am and 3.30pm, with a lane closure in place.
Cllr Mike Solomon, NSC cabinet member for open spaces, said: “The trees are posing an unacceptable risk to the safety of this busy route into Weston.
“We will be cutting the trees back to ground level which will have a significant impact on the street scene but the Willows will grow back in time.
“We would like to reassure people that this is routine maintenance and not the removal of the trees.
“This is essential work and we would ask people to be patient and avoid using the road during 9.30am and 3.30pm if possible.”
