GLASTONBURY to London in two-and-a-half hours could soon be possible – if a bid for funding to launch a new bus route is successful.

Town travellers are being urged to have their say over a proposal to create a new bus service between Glastonbury and Castle Cary station – with the timetable in synch with trains.

The bid is being overseen by the Glastonbury TrainLink group, which hopes to secure around £150,000 to run the service as a trial for at least six months.

“Our rail network provides a low carbon option of travel, however getting access to this network is not always easy,” the group said.

“Glastonbury has no direct public transport service to our nearest station, Castle Cary. We want to be the first town to provide a dedicated bus service that’s primary purpose is to link up with train arrivals and departures from their nearest railway station.”

Now, the group wants to hear from people about the potential new route via an online survey at glastonburytrainlink.org.

Glastonbury TrainLink hopes to secure funding through the Local Authority Bus Grant (LABG), with Somerset Council awarded £4.3 million a year for the next three years.

Through the Somerset Bus Partnership, the request has been put forward.

“Getting to the station can be tricky sometimes, especially if you are not driving, are too young or old to drive, do not have a car, are drinking alcohol or if it is too expensive,” the group went on.

“For younger generations, the added convenience of travel truly opens up the world broadening their horizons and ultimately creating more opportunities.”
