ROADS in Somerset remain closed today (January 28) after heavy rains brought on by Storm Chandra caused serious flooding.
The A359 between Yeovil and Sparkford is closed between West Mudford Road and the B3148 at Marston Magna, while the A361 New Road is closed between Stathe Road, Burrowbridge, and Cuts Road, in East Lyng.
Earlier, the A303 was closed in both directions between Podimore and Cartgate, but the eastbound carriageway has since re-opened, according to National Highways.
Police said there was “deep floodwater” between Podimore and Cartgate, with “several road traffic collisions”.
A number of adjoining routes have also been shut due to flooding making them impassable, they said.
However, while roads may improve today, a yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for tomorrow (Thursday, January 29) for heavy rain, affecting much of Somerset.
Forecasters said “further rain is expected and may lead to more flooding and transport disruption”.
“A band of rain is likely to reach south west England on Thursday afternoon, then spread quickly north-east across the rest of the warning area by evening,” the Met Office said.
“The rain is only likely to last for a few hours in any one location but will be heavy at times.
“A further 10mm to 20mm is likely quite widely, and in the wetter spots, particularly across the moor, a further 20mm to 40mm is possible and will fall on to already saturated ground.”
The warning will be in place from noon until midnight on Thursday (January 29).
Today (Wednesday), some Somerset schools remain fully or partially closed due to the bad weather, with others imposing late starts.
