PLEAS for Somerset households to recycle more food waste have been heard – with the equivalent of an extra 100,000 caddies collected in December.
Somerset Council said a whopping 2,130 tonnes of food waste was collected during the month, a 100-tonne increase when compared to 2024.
“To put it into perspective, that extra food waste is equal to 100,000 full kitchen caddies,” a spokesperson said.
“All those peelings, scraps and leftovers stayed right here in Somerset, where they were transformed into nutrient‑rich fertiliser and clean green energy.
“Thank you for recycling, lets keep it going.”
The news come after last year saw the authority appeal for households to recycle their food waste – claiming it could save the county around £1 million.
