Landmark Somerset flower display stocked with sustainable plants to beat climate change

NEW planting at a landmark Somerset display aims to save money, beat climate change, and still create a “vibrant, attractive” setting.

North Somerset Council (NSC) has refreshed Weston-super-Mare’s Floral Clock with hardy perennial plants in a bid to create a “more sustainable display” for the years ahead.

The replanting focuses on climate‑resilient and low‑maintenance species to help the display cope better with increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, on the back of last year’s hot summer, and the recent stormy conditions.

Now, the council said drought‑tolerant varieties such as Sempervivums and additional lavender have been introduced to “not only withstand hotter, drier conditions but also provide lasting colour, texture, and visual appeal”.

Cllr Mike Solomon, Cabinet member for culture, community services and safety at NSC, said: “The Floral Clock is one of our most recognisable local landmarks, and it’s wonderful to see it refreshed with plants that will thrive in our changing climate.

“I want to thank all the volunteers whose dedication keeps this feature looking its best year after year. Their contribution is invaluable, and we warmly welcome anyone who would like to join them in helping care for this much‑loved community space.”

The project has been supported by volunteers who play a big role in caring for the iconic feature and surrounding planters.

However, more volunteers are needed to support ongoing maintenance throughout the spring and summer months. For more information, or to volunteer, email parksranger@n-somerset.gov.uk.
