A LONG-STANDING sycamore tree in Frome is set to be felled due to fungus infestation.
The tree, at the Welshmill Pump Track, has been deemed unsafe and will be cut down on Thursday (January 15), Frome Town Council (FTC) said.
“We’re sad to share that after careful inspection a Sycamore tree by Welshmill Pump Track has been found to have a fungus called Kretzschmaria deusta, which weakens trees,” a spokesperson said.
“Following advice from our consultant arboriculturist, felling has been recommended on safety grounds.
“We know how important trees and green spaces are to our community, and this decision hasn’t been taken lightly. The trunk wood will be chipped and used in habitat piles for local wildlife.”
It comes after Taunton Town Council confirmed a mature horse chestnut in French Weir Park would be felled due to “extensive fungus growth”.
