Fresh weather warning for high winds in Somerset this weekend

PARTS of Somerset are being warned to expect high winds this weekend which could bring powers cuts and disruption on the roads.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the western half of the county between 6am and 6pm on Sunday (February 23).

Forecasters said the winds are “expected to increase through Sunday morning” with gusts rising to around 60mph – higher on the coast.

“Rain will accompany strong winds, which will make for very poor weather conditions, especially on roads,” they said.

“Winds will then ease from south west to north east of the warning area through the late afternoon and early evening.”

Anyone driving is being urged to check ahead for potential delays, while households should prepare for potential power cuts, the Met Office added.

The latest warning comes after Somerset has endured severe weather since the start of the year – and at the end of 2024.

Areas have been hit by flooding, bringing problems for farmers and on county roads.
