FIRE crews battled through the night to tackle a heathland fire in the Quantock Hills.
The call came at 8.20pm, reporting a fire in the West Bagborough area.
Crews from Taunton, Bridgwater, Nether Stowey and Middlemoor Exeter were sent to the scene, with equipment including a water bowser and all-terrain vehicles.
“Steady progress was made using beaters and Scotty backpacks alongside the all terrain Vehicles and a tractor with a water bowser,” said a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.
By around 1.40am, crews reported the fire had been put out.
The incident came as a rare amber wildfire alert was issued for parts of the UK as temperatures rise and dry conditions are expected to continue into the Easter holidays.
The DSFRS issued the following advice “to protect everyone”:
- Avoid using disposable barbecues in dry, grassy areas
- Never leave fires unattended and ensure they are fully extinguished
- Always put cigarettes out properly before disposing of them
- Dispose of rubbish responsibly – sunlight reflecting off glass can ignite fires
- If you see a wildfire, call 999 immediately and provide as much detail as possible
