Find out more about Celebration Mile at Bridgwater event – as fresh road closure begins

THE Celebration Mile will be the topic of a breakfast in Bridgwater this month – as another road closure for the project is set to begin.

Traders and residents are being invited to join a drop-in event to find out more about the scheme – which has seen work across the town in recent months.

The latest road closure, from February 17, could see Clare Street shut for up to five months.

However, between 9am to 11am on February 24, the event at the Mercure Hotel is open to all, giving visitors the chance to ask questions of representatives from Somerset Council and contractors Taylor Woodrow, as well as signing up for regular newsletters.

The Celebration Mile is one of 11 projects being delivered as part of the £23.2 million Bridgwater Town Deal, helping boost the social, cultural and economic offerings in the town centre.

But it has faced a mixed reaction from residents and businesses, including over ongoing roadworks to create the route.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council lead member for economic development, planning and assets, said: “The drop-in is a great chance to hear first-hand about current and future works along the route of the Celebration Mile. The team is looking forward to meeting as many people as possible.

“We can understand the frustrations that some may feel about the closure of Eastover and Clare Street. But work on the scale of the Celebration Mile does involve some disruption and we are trying to keep this to the minimum.

“Extra signs are being installed to make people aware that these two streets are very much open for business and accessible for shoppers, residents and businesses.”

During the Clare Street closure, the council said access for pedestrians and shoppers will be maintained.

Shops, businesses and residents have been visited by a representative from contractors Taylor Woodrow to make sure they are kept informed and have a point of contact for any concerns, they added.

What a load of absolute rubbish, town centres around the country have disappeared, unless the price of rent falls so small company’s can try and save Britains high streets. Money needs to be spent on pretty much anything else than a £učking celebration, what are the people that decide how money gets spent on because I’d like some please. 😠
