Become a master composter and spread the green word!

COMPOSTERS new and experienced are being sought to encourage the process in North Somerset.

People who want to improve their composting skills and volunteer their time to spread the word about the benefits of the practice at home are being invited to join a special workshop next month.

North Somerset Council (NSC) has joined forces with Garden Organic to provide free training for new volunteers at Yeo Valley Organic Gardens in Blagdon on Wednesday, May 7, from 10am to 4.30pm.

Master composters receive free membership to Garden Organic and ongoing support from project coordinators.

Spaces at the workshop are limited and must be booked by Friday, April 18, at www.gardenorganic.org.uk/nsmc.

Anyone unable to attend the May workshop can sign up to be a master composter and receive full support and training at another time.

Councillor Annemieke Waite, executive member for waste at NSC, said: “We want to make North Somerset a thriving and sustainable place to live, work and visit. If you’re passionate about home composting and could help promote the benefits, please sign up for our next volunteer training session.

“Composting at home is an easy, cheap and environmentally-friendly way to reduce your food and garden waste, creating a free nutrient rich compost for use in your garden.

“A huge thank you must also go to our dedicated group of master composter volunteers who do such important work to spread the word about the many wonders of home composting to their local communities.”

The training sessions are funded by NSC and delivered by Garden Organic.

Kate Eastment, project coordinator at Garden Organic, said: “People volunteer with us for a variety of reasons. Some are eager to support organic practices or the work of Garden Organic, while others are keen to give back to the community and develop new skills and knowledge.”

Anyone interested in becoming a master composter to help spread the word should go to www.gardenorganic.org.uk/nsmc, and for more information, contact Kate Eastment via keastment@gardenorganic.org.uk or call 07725 990708.
