YOUNG musicians took to the stage to showcase their skills during a Somerset school’s annual competition.
Banwell Primary School held its annual Musician of the Year Award winner’s concert and presentation on May 2, with winners performing to their fellow pupils, parents, carers and more.
The competition is now in its 29th year, with 20 hopefuls bidding to secure an award in five categories: Musician of the Year Award age 7-11, Musician of the Year Award age 4 -7, Most original Act, Wowed the judges, and Highly commended.
“The winners were chosen through an audition process which focused on confidence, uniqueness, musical talent and passion,” a school spokesperson said.
The Musician of The Year assembly was led and curated by assistant head Kate Evans and music lead and teacher, Sarah Dockerty.

Category winners performed live to a packed audience of parents, carers and the rest of the school, and showcased performances from a diverse group of pupils, ranging from a solo drummer, a family singing trio, acapella performances and solo vocalists. The show was brought to a close by a Year Six pupil singing a in the Polish language.
“Musician of the Year is a highlight in the Banwell calendar,” said Ms Dockerty. “It was wonderful to see all of the children’s hard work pay off culminating in a fantastic celebration and awards ceremony.
“We are very proud of all of the children who took part this year and are already looking forward to next year’s event.”
One performer, Rosie, said: “All of my family have their names on a trophy and now I can join them.
“It has taken me three years to become confident enough to perform in front of an audience and I am so pleased I did.”
