YOUNG and old people in and around Wincanton have been united this festive season thanks to a special link between Age UK and a town school.
Pupils from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, have been spreading festive kindness to elderly residents in the local community.
As part of the initiative, alongside Age UK Somerset, every child at the school created a Christmas card for older people living in and around Wincanton.
The cards have been distributed by Age UK Somerset to residents who may feel isolated or alone during the festive season.
The project followed the school’s annual Carol Service, held at St Luke and St Teresa’s Church, when pupils led the service through readings and carol singing, supported by families and staff.
After the service, families gathered in the church rooms for refreshments provided by the school’s PTFA.

Danuta Girton and Sheila Loftus, headteachers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, said: “This partnership with Age UK Somerset has given our children a meaningful way to show kindness and compassion at Christmas.
“They have really thought about how their words and artwork could brighten someone’s day, and we are very proud of the care they have shown for our wider community.”
Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, added: “Working with organisations such as Age UK Somerset helps our schools make a real difference beyond the classroom.
“This project is a wonderful example of how small actions, led by young people, can have a powerful impact on the wellbeing of others at such an important time of year.”
