Budding Somerset politicians urged to put themselves up for election

ASPIRING MPs and prime ministers of tomorrow are being encouraged to put themselves forward to speak for Somerset.

Nominations are open for the 2025 Youth Parliament Elections, with young people between 11 and 17 who live and go to school or college in the county able to apply.

The Youth Parliament gives young people the chance to campaign on issues that matter to them, to represent peers, and Somerset, on a national stage.

Three Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) will be elected with support from schools, colleges, and the community, with each leading a campaign of their choice, as well as working alongside services, organisations, and decision-makers to platform young people’s voices.

MYPs are also supported by an Advisory Group of young people between 10 and 25 from a range of backgrounds to develop campaigns, take part in consultations, interviews, presentations, promotions and contributing to planning.

Somerset Youth Parliament is a space for young people to learn new skills, grow confidence, share their views, get involved in current issues and make a difference.

Current Somerset MYP, Emma, said: “As an MYP, I’m able to connect with people across the county and really push for positive change.

“Standing for election isn’t just about you – it’s about everyone you’ll represent. Campaigning teaches you loads of useful skills and helps you think differently. Even if you don’t want to stand, make sure you vote.”

Cllr Heather Shearer, lead member for children, families and education, said: “It’s so important that young people feel heard and have the chance to shape the world around them.

“The Youth Parliament gives them a real platform to speak up and make a difference. I’d really encourage anyone who’s passionate about change to get involved – whether that’s standing for election or simply casting a vote.”

The deadline for nominations is Monday, November 3. Elections will take place in December, with young people in schools, colleges and youth clubs across Somerset eligible to vote.

Anyone aged between 11 and 17 years can register to nominate themselves for election at somersetyouthparliament.org.uk/elections with full voting information and links to be released in September.
The Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group is free to join and open to anyone aged between 10 and 25 who lives, works, or studies in Somerset. New members are always welcome. For more details, visit somersetyouthparliament.org.uk/about/join-us.
