Santa drops in to visit Somerset school children – by helicopter!

SANTA dropped in – literally – to visit Somerset school children and hand out gifts.

Children at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, in Wincanton, were thrilled when Father Christmas made a spectacular arrival on the grounds – by helicopter.

The chopper, which came all the way from Yeovilton, had pupils at the school – part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust – buzzing with excitement during the surprise visit.

It was part of wider festive celebrations at the school, which have included members of the chaplaincy team making Christingles for Mass in the church, and pupils presenting their nativity, Hey Ewe!, telling the story of a curious sheep who notices a bright star over the stable in Bethlehem and discovering the events unfolding there.

Pupils have also shared festive music beyond the school, singing at Wincanton Community Hospital and Elroi Manor Nursing and Residential Home, and performing as special guests with the South Somerset Good Afternoon Choir at Wincanton Memorial Hall.

Other seasonal events have included their Christmas Music Concert, a Christmas Disco, and a church Christmas Carol Service.

Danuta Girton and Sheila Loftus, headteachers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, said: “It’s been such a joy to see the children enjoying all our Christmas activities, from Santa arriving by helicopter to performing in the nativity and sharing music in the community.

“These celebrations really show what our school is all about, supporting every child, nurturing their talents, and living out our faith in a caring and welcoming environment.”

Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, said: “It’s fantastic to see the school bringing the community together at this special time of year. The children’s enthusiasm, creativity, and generosity really reflect the values we aim to nurture across all our schools.”
