OOPS, Somerset youngsters have done it again, with some pun-tastic names for new gritters taking to county roads.
Somerset Council and highways contractor Kier launched an appeal for school pupils in the county to come up with names for two new vehicles.
And after sifting through scores of suggestions, the new vehicles will be named Basil Salty and Gritney Spears.
They were named by young people at the South Somerset Partnership School and Bucklers Mead Academy – both in Yeovil – respectively.
The schools can now look forward to a visit from their gritter to check out their name on the vehicle.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and waste, said: “Thank you to everyone who took part, the schools for their amazing and creative name suggestions. We are always ready to grit one more time if the weather turns icy.
“We can’t wait to see Gritney Spears and Basil Salty on the road this winter, keep an eye out for them on your travels.”
Previous years have seen gritters named Gritty Gritty Bang Bang and Spready Mercury.
