Frome community rallies behind “fantastic” charity stalwart following attack

A FUNDRAISER has been launched after a Frome Town AFC steward was attacked following a football match.

Radek Evans, known by many in the town for his creative fundraising challenges and volunteer roles with many organisations and charities, was attacked by disgruntled football fans following the game between Frome Town AFC and Basingstoke Town FC at the weekend (October 12).

Radek was reportedly knocked out by a group of Basingstoke fans, who had stolen football club property, as he left the ground on the way to volunteer as a marshal at the Castle Cary carnival.

He wasn’t deterred by the attack however, as following the incident he went straight back into fundraising as he is attempting to run 24 half marathons this year to raise money to support Fair Frome, Frome Carnival, Purple Elephant and the Frome branch of the Macular Society.

A fundraiser has now been set up by the supporters’ club of Frome Town to help Radek, who is head of recycling at the club, buy a shed at Badgers Hill to house his recycling operation for the club.

The fundraiser has already reached more than £1,000.

A spokesperson for the supporters’ club said: “As some of you may or may not be aware, our amazing volunteer Radek Evans was involved in an incident outside the ground after the Frome Town AFC game on Saturday against Basingstoke Town FC where he was violently attacked by a visiting supporter.

“Radek works tirelessly as a volunteer and a fundraiser and now it’s time for us to do something for such a fantastic human being.

“We have set up this GoFundMe to get Radek a recycling headquarters that he has wished for and was going to purchase himself.”

Basingstoke Town condemned the attack in a statement.

It reads: “We strongly condemn the events that occurred following our recent fixture at Frome Town.

“The incident which took place outside the stadium, involved a minority of individuals claiming to be supporters of Basingstoke Town, and their behaviour does not reflect the values of our club and the vast majority of our well-behaved supporters.”

The club added: “The behaviour displayed by these individuals is wholly unacceptable, and we strongly condemn the actions that led to an alleged assault.

“To those responsible, we want to make it clear that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.”

The club is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward to help identify those responsible.
