THE Duchess of Cocklemoor boat – which was partially sunk after being targeted by vandals last week – is back afloat thanks to a community effort.
Some time between the afternoon of July 22 and 9am the following morning, the vessel was damaged by vandals while moored at the Somerset Community Rowing Club, in Langport.
The incident prompted a huge response from the community, with owner Ian MacNab hailing a “wave of love and support for our old boat” and vowing to bring it back into use providing affordable trips for residents and visitors.
A GoFundMe was launched, and the fund has now reached a massive £6,200 – well above the initial £5,500 target – and work to repair the Duchess is underway.

“The custodian and volunteers of The Duchess of Cocklemoor have been overwhelmed by the support from our local community and beyond,” a spokesperson said.
“The money raised has so far enabled the boat to be re-floated and the electrics made safe to enable trips to go ahead.
“While there is much more to do, such as replacing the batteries and the boat furniture, it is wonderful to have her back on the water.
