A £40,000 scheme to convert the landmark Silica at Big Lamp Corner in Weston-Super-Mare into an information hub started today (April 23).
The project will see the disused bus shelter in the landmark, on the corner of High Street and Regent Street, have information screens installed providing details of town events, community projects and more.
The structure will also be thoroughly cleaned as part of the scheme, which is being funded by North Somerset Council (NSC).
Once complete, the aim is for Weston-super-Mare Town Council to lease the ground floor for its Visit Weston service.

North Somerset Council would continue to operate and maintain the upper level and multi-coloured lighting, which were installed in 2022.
Cllr Mark Canniford, NSC executive member for placemaking and economy, said: “I’m delighted to see that by working in partnership with Weston-super-Mare Town Council, we’ve identified an effective and viable use for the Silica.
“I’m sure as a visitor information space, it will help to provide valuable community information to support residents and visitors alike. I know local businesses are really positive and supportive of these plans too, which is great.”
The first element of work will be carried out by local contactor John West, with the project set to take around six weeks.
