Somerset weather warnings in place for high winds and heavy rainfall

AS if recent downpours weren’t enough for Somerset folks – a weather warning is in place for more heavy rain, with another for high winds in parts of the county.

The Met Office has issued two warnings – one for heavy rain across Somerset, which forecasters said “may bring some flooding and travel disruption in places on Monday night into Tuesday morning”, and another for strong winds that “may cause some disruption” overnight and tomorrow morning (December 9) in the west and south of the county.

The warning for rain is in place from 6pm today (Monday), until 2pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The Met Office waring people to expect:

  • a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
  • homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life
  • delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible
  • spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • some communities may be cut off by flooded roads
  • possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses

A forecaster said: “Outbreaks of rain will become persistent and heavy on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

“There will naturally be some variation in rainfall totals across the area, but accumulations of 20mm to 40mm are likely in quite a few places, with 60mm to 80mm over Dartmoor and high ground in Wales.

“There is a chance of up to 100mm falling over the most exposed, prone hills.

“Given the saturated nature of the ground, this is likely to lead to some flooding in places and transport disruption.

“Rain will also be accompanied by strengthening southerly winds, which may exacerbate impacts.”

On the strong winds, the Met Office experts said: “South to south-westerly winds will strengthen on Monday night and remain strong and gusty into Tuesday morning, before gradually easing through Tuesday afternoon.

“Peak gusts of 40mph to 50mph are expected fairly widely, but gusts of 60mph to 70mph will be possible along some exposed coasts and over/to the north of high ground.”

It comes after Somerset saw a lot of rain over the weekend and at the end of last week.

However, it means temperatures are likely to stay above freezing, reaching as high as 14C in some places.
