WEATHER warnings for snow and strong winds have been issued for the coming days – covering much of Somerset – as rain from Storm Goretti is expected to run to snow.
The Met Office said higher round in the county could see a dusting of the white stuff, with the yellow alert in place from 8pm on Thursday (January 8) to 9am on Friday.
High winds are expected across a wider span of Somerset, with a yellow alert in place from 3pm on Thursday until 6am on Friday morning, as Storm Goretti makes its way across the country.
On snow, a Met Office forecaster said: “Rain associated with Storm Goretti will likely turn to snow in places through Thursday night, persisting for several hours before turning back to rain.
“Accumulations of 2-5cm are expected above 200m elevation, with perhaps as much as 10cm on the highest ground of Dartmoor and Exmoor.”
They said the rain, sleet and snow will “gradually ease into Friday morning”.
As for high winds, the forecaster said Storm Goretti could bring gusts of between 60mph and 70mph on Thursday night, possibly causing travel disruption.
From Friday to Sunday, the Met Office said rain and snow would clear eastwards, “leaving showers on Friday”.
“Gales easing. Brighter and drier on Saturday, with frost early and late. Rain and strong winds returning on Sunday. Remaining cold,” they added.
