Work to begin on new aparthotel in Weston after plans to add two storeys approved

A WESTON-Super-Mare office block is set to be converted into an apartment hotel – or ‘aparthotel’ – after plans were approved.

Permission has been given to add two new levels to the town-centre Union House building, which will create 47 studio apartments – aimed at leisure and business travellers.

The existing building is a 1960s concrete frame structure, while the new levels will be constructed using lightweight timber, designed to sit atop the original frame.

Initial plans included a third additional level with sea views but this was taken out to ensure compliance under the Building Safety Act 2022, according to developer Boyce Group.

The studios, which the firm says will “comfortably sleep up to four people”, will be available for direct
booking, as well as via platforms such as Airbnb.

“The project is set to breathe new life into an underutilised site and contribute positively to Weston’s evolving tourism and hospitality offering,” a Boyce Group spokesperson said.

The aparthotel will be operated by Nap, which currently runs serviced apartments in central Bristol and is in the process of developing other purpose-built aparthotels across the city.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Weston,” said Niall Leighton-Boyce, director of Boyce Group and Nap. “The building no longer serves as desirable office space, so giving it a new lease of life is a win for the town.

“We’re confident the aparthotel will attract both contractors during quieter months and families over the summer holidays.

“Each studio is ideal for small groups or young families. Personally, I’m excited to see how The Tropicana performs as a venue – many of its visitors will appreciate the comfort and style of staying at Nap Weston, especially compared to some of the town’s more dated B&Bs.

“Weston has historically lacked good quality, independently owned short-term accommodation. The existing dated stock has held the town back from an investment and tourism perspective.

“With the investment from Boyce Group into Nap Weston, this is set to change, hopefully encouraging further development and business activity in the area.

“Weston has a lot to offer, and it’s only fitting that we provide quality accommodation for visitors.”

Construction is set to begin this summer, taking an estimated 12 months, ready in time for the school holidays in 2026.

Existing ground-floor retail units at Union House will remain open and operational throughout the build, including current retailers such as The Phone Guys, Marks Mobile Butchers, Coral and First Bus.
