Why Somerset youngster Amber, 20, chose a career in funeral care…

MOST young people might not cite helping people through some of life’s most difficult times as a career goal. But for 20-year-old Amber Sarter, it makes perfect sense.

Described by her family as “compassionate and caring”, Amber left a job in retail for a mobile funeral arranger role with Co-op Funeralcare Clevedon, and three months in, feels she is already making a difference.

“I wanted to pursue a career where I could really make a difference,” she said. “I originally applied for a back-of-house position, but when I met my manager during the interview, he suggested the arranger role – and it felt perfectly timed.”

Her family were initially surprised by her choice, she said, but soon realised it was a good fit.

“After a few seconds, they said, ‘Actually, that makes perfect sense’,” Amber went on.

“They’ve always described me as compassionate and caring, which are essential qualities in our line of work.”

Amber’s role involves welcoming families, supporting them with funeral arrangements, and ensuring everyone in the branch’s care is treated with dignity.

“It’s a privilege to help people at such a vulnerable time,” she said. “Even after a short time, I can already see how rewarding this role is. The families I work with are so kind and grateful – it’s inspiring.”

Looking ahead, she said she aims to build a long-term career in funeralcare, and urged others to consider the sector.

“It’s a role that can fit around life, family, and my own personal growth,” Amber added. “I could absolutely see myself doing this for years to come.”
