West Somerset bakery looks to expand – and build new industrial units

A WEST Somerset bakery could soon expand – and offer two industrial units for lease – if plans are approved.

Glenmore Bakery has submitted a planning application to Somerset Council to build a detached building split into three ‘light industrial’ units at the Roughmoor Industrial Estate, in Williton.

The larger of the units (166sqm) would be retained by Glenmore, the plans said, with two others (both 74sqm) offered for “local letting”.

“The proposed building would provide a positive contribution to the area by allowing the applicant’s successful business to expand further and provide two highly desirable commercial units for local letting,” it said.

“The loss of this open space in this location would not be detrimental to the local vernacular, or street scene, nor would it have a detrimental impact on ecology.”

It would be accessed via Slade Way, as the current buildings are, with parking for eight vehicles – two each for the smaller units and four for the larger premises.

“The existing footpath link to Long Street would be retained, along with all the existing boundary treatments,” the application added.

Founded in the late 1990s, Glenmore Bakery has developed into a successful family-run firm, with branches in Williton and Minehead.

The scheme will now be considered by council planners. For more details, and to comment, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 3/39/26/003.
