Somerset workers recreate legendary 1930s New York shot to mark business move

A FAMILY-run Somerset steel firm has celebrated moving to new premises by taking a novel new team photo.

Fabrication company Denton-Powell marked 50 years in the business with a move to a new production base at the Conquest Business Park, in Ilton, near Ilminster.

And to mark the occasion – staff recreated a historic photograph, itself involving their material of choice; steel.

Workers at Denton-Powell posed for a team photo inspired a famous photograph, taken in 1932, of New York steelworkers sitting on a girder suspended high above the city below.

Contracts manager, Clive Hardy, said: “Denton-Powell’s drive and enthusiasm is infectious.

“Moving to Denton-Powell and marrying my experience with their positive attitude is proving to be a winning combination, plus their new comprehensive manufacturing facility enables us to fulfil all our clients’ needs, whether it’s the large-scale structure of a new building or smaller bespoke metalwork in stainless and aluminium to complete their projects.”

He said the new steel fabrication facilities, plus dedicated offices, would boost the business, which manufactures and supplies building frameworks to construction companies across the UK.

The original photograph – Lunch atop a Skyscraper – was taken on September 20, 1932, and featured 11 ironworkers sitting on a steel beam during construction of the RCA Building, 850ft above the ground.

The RCA Building is now known as 30 Rockefeller Plaza, part of the Rockefeller Centre.
