SHOPPERS in Street were left disappointed when browsing the town’s weekly market today – after only one trader turned out.
As Somerset sheltered under weather warnings for high winds and icy conditions, the street market suffered an especially low turnout.
The disappointment meant the High Street was closed, despite there not being any real need.
A spokesperson for the market said it had underestimated the low turnout in the first week back after Christmas, and amid the poor weather.
“We’re sorry that the market is so quiet today, a number of traders dropped with the poor weather forecast and it is the first week in January, we did not however anticipate only one trader in the market today,” they said.
“We will consider a backup strategy for closing the road in the event of low trader numbers in the future.”
Street Parish Council took over running the popular market last spring, and has worked to “grow the market offering and implement improvements that benefit the entire community”.
And before today’s sale, organisers had warned it would be “a much-reduced market” as “traders like to have time off in January and we don’t blame them”.
Most residents reacted with sympathy after the low turnout, with one saying: “Fair play to the trader who did turn up.”
That trader is understood to have been The Little Bakery Langport, who are at the market most weeks.
