PLANS for a replacement leisure and community hub – part of the huge Gravity development near Bridgwater – have been submitted.
The scheme, submitted to Somerset Council by Reed Holland on behalf of This is Gravity Ltd, details plans to build a new centre, replacing the soon-to-be-demolished 37 Club in Puriton.
The two-storey building, boasting some 923sqm of space, will contain ‘replacement facilities’ from the 37 Club, including four snooker tables, two skittles alleys and a licensed bar.
“The first floor contains a private function room and café with amenities, kitchen and bar area,” the application said.
A site off Woolavington Road, on the outskirts of Puriton, will be used for the new building, accessed by “a purpose-built road running parallel with the field boundary”.
“The new facility will serve the local community and the Gravity Smart Campus,” the application went on.
It added: “The scheme proposes to provide 15 car parking spaces immediately north on the building including four disabled spaces with five EV charging points placed closest to the main entrance.”
An overflow car park, providing a further 38 spaces, would also be created, along with bicycle stands.

Inside, the design would see facilities split by floor, the planning documents said.
“The first, located on the lower ground floor, replaces the 37 club and provides its own dedicated bar, four snooker tables, two skittles alleys and disabled toilets,” it added.
“Connecting this to the upper floor is a simple stair wrapping around a small lift on the north western corner of the building.
“The upper floor places all of the supporting areas along the eastern edge; the WC’s, kitchen and store areas.
“The public areas are split into two with a foldable partition wall, capable of retracting and forming a much larger space for events.

“The northern section is a bar and function area, while the southern portion is a softer café environment that links to the exterior outdoor terrace to the north.
“These are connected by a large 12 metre-long bar that serves both areas and links to the kitchen.”
Gravity is an enormous, UK-first ‘smart campus’ spanning more than 616 acres of the former Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) property in Puriton.
It aims to be home to a number of high-tech firms – including the new battery factory – which could bring thousands of jobs to Somerset.
