Four-bedroom house plan for Taunton hairdressing salon

PLANS to convert a former hairdressing salon and offices in the centre of Taunton into a four-bedroom house have been submitted.

Paul Rowe Design Services Ltd, on behalf of Meltor Developments Ltd, has applied to Somerset Council for permission to change the use of 15 Hammet Street to a residential dwelling, as well as a number of “minor internal alterations”.

The application said the changes aimed to “secure the long-term viable use of the building” and that there were no plans to extend or alter its external appearance.

The property is a listed building arranged over three floors, home to the Norman Hodge salon.

However, if approved, the plans would see the current salon converted into a kitchen and living room on the ground floor, with offices and a kitchen on the first floor become two bedrooms and a bath room, and offices and two bathrooms on the second floor converted to two double bedrooms, a bathroom, and a study.

“The proposed works are limited to minor internal alterations only,” the application went on.

“There are no external works proposed, no increase in footprint, and no alterations to the existing fenestration.”

A residential property would be “consistent with the building’s historic origins”, the plan said, and is “compatible with the surrounding town centre context”.

Somerset Council planners will now consider the scheme. For more details, and to comment, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 38/26/0036.
