Former hotel near Taunton has new owners, a new name – and big plans…

THE former Mount Somerset hotel near Taunton is under new ownership – and is set to be restored as a place “for people to celebrate their special occasions”.

It has been bought by luxury events and venue company PM Hospitality Limited, run by Andrew and Aimee Carveth, who have revealed big plans for the 19-bedroom property, at Henlade.

The couple have already rebranded the grade II-listed Regency mansion with its original name – Henlade House – and intend to complete the renovation work already underway.

“We’re thrilled to have come across The Mount Somerset, it’s a striking period property that has been restored thoughtfully, but we still have the opportunity to complete the renovations that were started, and make our mark on this unique location,” Andrew said.

PM Hospitality already runs venues such as Coombe Lodge in Bristol, Rockbeare Manor in Devon, and Priston Mill in Bath, with Andrew adding how Henlade House, which was built between 1805 and 1815, would compliment the firm’s portfolio.

“The property compliments our other venues in the South West, which are popular locations for weddings and corporate events,” he went on.

“We’re looking forward to bringing The Mount Somerset back to the market as a place for people to celebrate their special occasions.”

Henlade House has operated as a hotel for most of the 21st century, and was renamed the Mount Somerset in 2011.

Formerly part of the Von Essen and Eden Collection of hotels, it last changed hands in 2021 when it was purchased as a lockdown renovation project.

Now, after an extensive overhaul of the ground floor and external features, the previous owner decided to concentrate on other projects and has handed over custodianship to Andrew and Aimee.

They are now setting about bringing their decades of experience running venues to Henlade House.

Ed Jefferson, of the Colliers specialist hotels team that handled the sale, said: “Large period properties like The Mount Somerset are beautiful projects and it’s exciting to hear about Andrew and Aimee’s plans to continue the renovations so that it can join their portfolio of stunning locations for events and celebrations in the south west.”

Good to learn it will revert to its former name. Pubs and the like should not be allowed to name change. They were my navigation aids.
