Former Frome pub could become offices – until demand returns

A FORMER Frome pub could be converted to offices for three years – when it is hoped demand for the venue will have returned.

A planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council by Brimble Lea on behalf of Mr Webb, owner of the former Packhorse Inn, in Christchurch Street West.

“The applicant purchased the premises from auction in 2017 and has undertaken a significant amount of much-needed renovation,” the application said.

“However, there is no demand for another public house in this location whereas the applicant has an urgent need to relocate the offices for his business, Connor Construction (South West) Ltd, currently based at Crees Quarry, Holwell.”

The application seeks permission for a change of use, meaning the property could become offices for the business for three years, “in the hope there will be demand for a new public house in future”.

In support of the plans, the application details there are 22 licensed drinking establishments with 1,000 metres of the Packhorse site.

“As such, suitable alternative provision is being made in the locality and will be available before change of use commences,” it went on.

A car park will be available for staff at the rear of the premises, and would not impact neighbours any more than use as a public house, the plan said.
