SHEPTON Mallet Prison secured two citations at the recent Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards.
The attraction, touted as the world’s oldest prison and reputed to be the most haunted, was awarded Commended status in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category.
“Our team is delighted to receive Commended status at the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards,” said Charlie Lawson, attraction director of Cove Attractions, which runs the Somerset prison.
“This honour reflects the hard work and passion of our entire team. We pride ourselves on offering visitors an authentic and engaging experience that brings history to life, from the Jacobean Era to modern times, and it’s wonderful to see that recognised.”
Meanwhile, Monica Newton, duty manager of heritage and tours, received the prestigious Unsung Hero Award, recognising an individual working for a tourism business who excels in their role and deserves to be applauded for their work and commitment to the industry.

“It has been incredibly well received by students across all Key Stage levels and is having a direct impact on the younger generations’ understanding of crime and punishment.”
The firm said the accolades highlight Shepton Mallet Prison’s ongoing commitment “to preserve, protect and promote its rich history, while delivering engaging and meaningful experiences for all visitors”.
The landmark offers a range of tours, activities and events, including escape rooms, ghost hunting experiences and the unique Night Behind Bars.
