The regeneration project, which aims to “maintain the town’s Arts legacy as well as stimulate local economic growth”, will see the town hall converted into a state-of-the-art theatre and community hub.
Award-winning Bristol contractor, John Perkins Construction, has now started work on the scheme, which has been timetabled not to interfere with the famous Bridgwater Carnival Concerts, in October.
Rupert Perkins, managing director of John Perkins Construction, said: “At John Perkins Construction we are extremely proud of and attached to our roots in this part of South West England.
“We feel very privileged to have the opportunity to be part of the team to make such a positive intervention in the rich history of the Bridgwater Town Hall, and to leave it as a beacon to encourage further investment and development in the town for the benefit of the residents.”
Planning permission and listed building consent have been secured for the scheme, which town chiefs say will “transform Bridgwater Town Hall into a state-of-the-art theatre and community hub, providing enhanced experiences for performers, audiences, and visitors alike”.

Cllr Tim Mander, chair of Bridgwater Town Council’s (BTC) Amenities Committee, added: “The investment in updating and restoring this iconic Grade II-listed building is long awaited and part of an important regeneration of this section of the High Street.”
The venue was the setting for the first Bridgwater Carnival Concert in 1883.
The concerts are highly anticipated and play a crucial role in financing carnival floats, as well as bringing visitors and revenue to the town.
BTC said the work aims to restore the “former glory of the theatre, while revolutionising the buildings accessibility, all the while creating sustainability to secure the buildings future”.
A new atrium to replace the existing 1950s structure will create a central hub, providing circulation space and administrative spaces, creating a “premier arts and entertainment venue, reinforcing the town’s commitment to culture, accessibility, and sustainability”.
