Taunton Brewhouse bosses move to reassure theatregoers over finances

THE Brewhouse theatre in Taunton will “continue to serve the community for many years to come”, it is hoped, as talks over funding continue.

Cash-strapped Somerset Council, Taunton Town Council and Taunton Brewhouse are in talks around how any future funding for the venue will work.

However, theatre bosses say they are confident a plan can be agreed that will secure the riverside venue’s long-term future.

Val Hammond, chair of the Taunton Theatre Association Ltd board, said: “While work on the detailed arrangements is ongoing, the Board of Taunton Theatre Association believes that the outcome will see a secure future for Taunton Brewhouse, enabling it to continue to serve the community for many years to come.”

Advance ticket monies are held in savings accounts, thus earning interest for the charity as well as offering assurance, she said, while shows are already booked throughout 2025 and 2026.

She said a broad programme of live events, including cinema, activities and exhibitions, with the theatre’s café and bar playing an increasing role, are all going ahead as normal at the Coal Orchard attraction.

Staff are also working hard on this year’s Christmas show, Pinocchio, which organisers hope will attract record numbers, a spokesperson said.

Taunton Brewhouse appreciates the support and enthusiasm of its friends and patrons and remains committed to serving as a cultural hub and vibrant part of the local community,” they added.

The Brewhouse is run by Taunton Theatre Association Ltd, a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, set up in 2013 by members of the community for the express purpose of ensuring the continued work of the venue.

Since reopening in April 2014 and up until March 31, 2024, in spite of closures during Covid restrictions, the theatre welcomed 487,852 people to take part in, or see, some 6,557 events.
