Ozzy Osbourne: The night the Prince of Darkness rocked Taunton

THE music world is united in grief after the passing of legendary Black Sabbath frontman, Ozzy Osbourne.

The passing of the Prince of Darkness – famed for vocals on hits including Iron Man, Paranoid, War Pigs and countless more – was confirmed by the Osbourne family on Tuesday (July 22).

Ozzy was living with a form of Parkinson’s disease, and just weeks ago performed a farewell concert at Villa Park in his home city of Birmingham, including a set alongside his original Brummie Black Sabbath bandmates.

He was 76 and leaves wife, Sharon, and six children.

In Somerset, many fans will be remembering their hero – and one show in Taunton.

On October 10, 1980, buses and trucks rolled into the town centre to set up for a show at the Taunton Odeon – which later became the Mecca Bingo hall.

That night, fans were treated to a setlist consisting of Sabbath classics and solo hits from the seminal performer – and guitarist Randy Rhodes, who passed away in a plane crash just two years later.

The full set list from the Taunton show in 1980 – which culminated in an encore of Sabbath’s anthem, Paranoid – was:
I Don’t Know
You Lookin’ at Me Lookin’ at You
Crazy Train
Goodbye to Romance
No Bone Movies
Mr Crowley
Revelation (Mother Earth)
Suicide Solution
Guitar Solo (Randy Rhoads)
Drum Solo (Lee Kerslake)
Iron Man
Children of the Grave
Steal Away (The Night)
Encore:
Paranoid

Meanwhile, fellow giants of the music world have paid tribute to a man dubbed an ‘inspiration’ by many in the world of rock and heavy metal.

They were led by Osbourne’s Sabbath bandmates.

Drummer Bill Ward said: “Where will I find you now? In the memories, our unspoken embraces, our missed phone calls? No, you’re forever in my heart.”

Geezer Butler, bassist in Black Sabbath, said: “Goodbye dear friend. Thanks for all those years – we had some great fun. Four kids from Aston – who’d have thought, eh?”

And guitarist Tony Iommi added: “I just can’t believe it. My dear dear friend Ozzy has passed away only weeks after our show at Villa Park.

“It’s just such heartbreaking news that I can’t really find the words, there won’t ever be another like him. Geezer, Bill and myself have lost our brother.

“My thoughts go out to Sharon and all the Osbourne family. Rest in peace Oz.”

Elsewhere, metal legends Metallica said: “It’s impossible to put into words what Ozzy Osbourne has meant to Metallica. Hero, icon, pioneer, inspiration, mentor, and, most of all, friend are a few that come to mind.”

Aston Villa Football Club, the team Ozzy followed throughout his life, said it was “saddened to learn that world-renowned rockstar and Villan, Ozzy Osbourne has passed away”.

“Growing up in Aston, not far from Villa Park, Ozzy always held a special connection to the club and the community he came from,” the club said.

“The thoughts of everyone at Aston Villa are with his wife Sharon, his family, friends, and countless fans at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace, Ozzy.”
