Norman’s 90 years to be marked with photography exhibition and model railway

THE 90th birthday of a Yeovil photographer is being celebrated with a number of special events at his church.

Norman Browne, who has been a keen snapper since childhood, will have a selection of his pictures displayed at St John’s Church to honour his landmark day.

Entitled Tread Softly in This Precious Paradise, the display celebrates “a lifetime devoted to capturing the beauty and fragility of the natural world” and will run from November 22 to 29.

“Norman’s love of photography began in childhood, inspired by his father, who won an award for his photography the year Norman was born,” a spokesperson said.

“His father taught him the craft and Norman spent decades working exclusively with film cameras.”

The exhibition features a collection of landscapes from the USA, Canada, and France, right through to the beautiful coastlines of the West Country.

Among the prints featured is a striking image of Ben Nevis, taken in 1950 and developed more than 50 years ago in Norman’s own darkroom.

Meanwhile, the St John’s Model Railway Group will be appearing at the launch on Saturday, November 22, with their detailed model of Yeovil Junction.

“Norman was a valued member of this group for many years, contributing to the development of the model and remaining a passionate advocate for local transport throughout his life,” the spokesperson added.

Admission to the exhibition is free, with photographs for sale on a donation basis in support of St John’s Church and Christians Against Poverty.
