Events planned as Black History Month flag flies over North Somerset

THE Black History Month flag is flying with pride over North Somerset – with a series of events planned for the coming weeks.

North Somerset Council (NSC) has hoisted the colours of BHM alongside the Union Flag at Weston-Super-Mare Town Hall.

Black History Month takes place each October, recognising, celebrating and honouring the contributions of Black people and communities to British society.

For 2025, the theme is Standing Firm in Power and Pride, highlighting the resilience, achievements, and leadership of Black people throughout history and in the present day.

The district is set to host a series of talks, workshops, exhibitions and performances to “educate, celebrate heritage and inspire future generations”.

Black History Month events on offer include:

  • Power in our Purpose – past, present and future – Tuesday, October 14 from 2pm to 3.30pm: A thought-provoking online session which will celebrate Black history while exploring its influence across the past, present, and future.
  • Power and Pride: Weston’s annual Black History Month Forum – Friday, October 17 from 2pm to 3.30pm, at Front Room WSM: An evening of conversation, culture, and community with a live panel, poetry, and storytelling.
  • Grace will lead us home – Friday, October 31, from 8pm, at Nailsea Tithe Barn: A powerful concert looking at the story of Amazing Grace, slavery and abolition.
  • Free Black History Month exhibition at The Other Place: Open Monday to Friday, from noon to 5pm, until the end of October.
