Stamps, coins – and unusual recipes – spark top sales at Somerset Showrooms

BOOKS, coins, stamps and more were snapped up at a Somerset sale of collectibles.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) hosted its latest event at the Somerset Salerooms, at Junction 24 in North Petherton, featuring a raft of unusual lots.

Among them were a selection of coins and commemorative medals which garnered pleasing prices for sellers, a spokesperson said.

A £2,600 bid was received for a limited-edition collection of George V sovereigns in a Royal Mint presentation case.

Krugerrands are a perennial favourite among collectors and a range of examples came under the hammer, with two from 1980 making £1,600 and £1,550 respectively.

Close behind was a Royal Mint for Hallmark 22ct gold replica of a George V Postal Union Congress £1 stamp. The limited-edition example was housed in its case of issue and sold for £1,750.

Stamps continue to set collectors’ hearts aflutter and there were a number of collections that salegoers in the room and online tussled for ownership.

A price of £1,200 was achieved for a set of Queen Elizabeth II British and British Commonwealth examples, most mainly mounted and in mint condition, bought by an online bidder.

Meanwhile, a British Commonwealth set of unmounted mint condition George VI stamps sold for £1,050.

Elsewhere, books offered a glimpse into a bygone past, with a 19th Century commonplace book of African exploration selling for £650.

A late 18th Century manuscript recipe book proffered advice on making everything from ‘French fritters’ and ‘Italian cheese’ to ‘stew mutton like venison’, along with ‘an approv’d receipt for cowslip wine’, sold for £320.

And a manuscript account book, circa 1711-1758, including assessments for ‘ye poor’ and land taxes, plus a few recipes – including one ‘to make cowslop wine’ – sold for £480.

The next collectors and selected antiques sale takes place at the venue on Wednesday, October 30, from 11.30am. For more information or to consign items, call the Somerset Salerooms on 01278 410250.
