A SOUTH AFRICAN coin sold for a whopping £2,360 during a Somerset auction – alongside a postcard featuring a Manchester United and Manchester City football star.
The gold Krugerrand coin, dating from 1976, was among the highlights at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s (GTH) latest specialist sale at the Somerset Salerooms.
Not far behind, in the postcard section, was a photographic portrait of William ‘Billy’ Meredith, of Manchester City, Man Utd and Wales fame, who was considered one of the early superstars of the professional game.
Meredith (July 1874 – April 1958) won each domestic trophy in the English football league and gained 48 caps for Wales.

His habit of chewing on a toothpick during games made him instantly recognisable.
The postcard, which was in generally good condition, though the corners were slightly rounded, aroused a good deal of pre-auction interest and bidding quickly rose briskly with the gavel coming down at £1,700.
The next similar sale is on December 10, with GTH also hosting a timed online sale of books and collectables where more affordable items are on offer.
