Auctioneer highlights booming gold prices ahead of Christmas season

CHRISTMAS is coming – and people are being encouraged to consider cashing in their gold to raise any much-needed funds for the festive season.

Experts at Somerset-based auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) say the price of gold has ‘gone galactic’ – increasing more than 20% this year.

And the global precious metal phenomenon played at in real time at the firm’s most recent jewellery, silverware and watches auction at the Somerset Sale Rooms, in North Petherton.

An 18ct gold charm bracelet – a double curb link chain with various 9ct, 14ct, and 18ct gold charms – easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate and sold for £1,150.

“However, it’s not just ‘best in show’ items that are grabbing attention and cash,” a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, an assortment of 9ct gold chains – necklaces and a bracelet, mostly broken – were snapped up for £750, and an 18ct gold ruby and diamond bracelet, with one ruby missing, sold for £660.

A 9ct gold ingot pendant and a selection of rings – a gent’s signet ring and another embossed with a St Christopher and a ladies floral and heart motif ring – went for £540.

Appropriately, with the party season approaching, a ladies 9ct gold Rotary cocktail watch was sold for £760. And continuing the timepiece theme, an Asprey 18ct gold Art Deco pocket watch made £680.

There had been much pre-sale interest in an Art Nouveau silver and enamel trinket box.

The tiny item – standing 4cm tall, with one slightly bent foot – featured a hinged lid decorated in iridescent blue and green enamel in flowing Art Nouveau design. Hallmarked Birmingham 1907, it sold for £320.
